most ultra by VanHeist most ultra by VanHeist
if you follow me on twitter, you knew this was coming maybe perhaps.

just to be clear, this is totally a snarky lark...yesterday i was given a link to a Bomango discussion on 4chan. It was pretty illuminating to read for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it's very bizarre to see my stuff discussed outside of dA and all. I just generally assume I'm known here and nowhere else. Silly, i know, but i kinda live on an island, so...

But it was also an interesting read because it highlighted a lot of points about "Bomango" that are very frustrating to an audience, and to a creator as well. The 3 C's: Canon, Continuity, and Chronology. I will be the first to admit that I've really come at this "series" and its characters in a VERY sideways manner, creating one-shots, what-ifs, and developing characters absent of a cohesive storyline. The result is (i think) fun characters with personality and a certain amount of development both visually and characteristically, but without a solid foundation, reference, or ultimately a goal of any kind. I've hinted at things, flirted with ideas, but I've yet to present a full narrative and that does screw with people.

Also it turns out that Gogo is either a pretty cool brown-skinned muscle-y girl with fun speech and attitude, or a very frustratingly presented walking fetish, or perhaps retarded, or whatever. I guess people are going to have different opinions about such things.

On the whole, I'm glad I was given a peek outside my usual internet stomping grounds. Minus a troll or two, it seemed like people had a generally positive reaction to this "non-comic" i've got going on, but are often thwarted in their enjoyment by me messing around and not committing to the aforementioned 3 C's.

Final note: "Mary Sue Ultrabitch" was a phrase I read and immediately thought made an excellent t-shirt. Whether or not you think Gogo qualifies as such is entirely your opinion, but it sure sounds cool :)

The most mary sue characters are moral paragons that are either flawless or have irrelevant flaws (like its mentioned but ignored by the plot).
Gogo is neither a moral paragon nor flawless.

as for the walking fetish thing, i think its awesome how you can look for porn on deviantart and sometimes find your way to diamonds like this.

I think Gogo really can't be a Mary Sue, because none of her powers have really helped her.  In fact, all they seem to do is make her life more difficult (and entertaining).

I actually really like the way you've released Bomango. The characters are all strong enough to stand without an over-arching plot line, and the varied format really allows you to see all sides of them. The short one-shot comics show their personalities in a fun and funny way, while the longer stories often delve deeper into their... unique relationships. The epic wordless "what-if" pictures are awesome in their own right.

Of course, I would also love to see them in a longer adventure in which we might find out a little bit Gogo's past, and of course her plans to turn into a dragon and destroy us all. But whatever, I'm happy as long as you keep on doing what you're doing. :)
I salute you!

For me as a German person, I think her speech sounds much like a German dialect. Not only because of the "ja" she frequently uses, it's her syntax, too. It could also be somewhat eastern Europe. As far as I know German and Cyrillic languages sound a lot alike to foreign people. She could have roots there, from what I can see she could be some kind of incarnation of a Germanic God(dess). Who knows:) In the end she just chose the roughest languages as her Dialect. But one way or the other it fits her perfectly. Oh and I would never think she is retarded just a little immature.
So to put it in a nutshell or as we say "lange Rede, kurzer Sinn", she is a very complicated, mysterious character, but that makes her the great person she is. She deserves to be called "most ultra".

One of my favorite things about Gogo is that she ALWAYS has a shirt on that says something controversial/inappropriate/hilarious that fits her personality, and hardly ever a blank one, if she ever has a blank one.

It's always hard for an artist / creator to see its work judged, especially on the interwebs. The comics and related artworks already establish the characters and the mood of the universe, and compose a formidable field of experimentations and stories, it doesn't always need to lead on something huge, absolutely cohesive, or let's say more substantial.
I think every artist should do the stuff they want before deciding to move on something bigger.

By the way, I just discovered your work, it's freakin' amazing.

She can't be a true Mary Sue because the "story" (or whatever you have) is built around the fact that she is as powerful as she is. It's like what Jontron said about Banjo Kazooie being a collectathon. In most games, it's bad, but that game was built to make it work. Your character's setting works for what you're trying to achieve.

Gogo's as much a Mary Sue as Wolverine from the X-Men is a Marty (or is it 'Gary'?) Stu.

An overpowered, highly sexual character with a shady, confusing and oftentimes conflicting past? Check.
Subject to horrific experimentation by the government as part of some mysterious super-weapon program? Check. Habit of hanging around much younger characters of the opposite sex and becoming an ambiguous mentor / guardian to them? Check.
Weirdness magnet? DOUBLE check!

There are dozens of characters strewn throughout Western and Eastern culture who display any number of these traits in different blends and flavors. I don't know whether to count Bomango as a deconstruction just yet, but it's been fun to see this kind of character dropped in an suburban, almost sitcom-y setting and the hijiinks that have ensued. I'm not in any hurry to get to any of the Cs.

I've been here with you and Gogo for a long long time, from the time that she was a weird skinny kid with too few clothes and strange body function issues. I've watched her, in the semi-canonish, episodic manner of your presentation grow into a legit Beast of a young woman and every step of the way she's had a clear and interesting personality.

Ultra-bitch... yeah i can see that. When she gets rough no punches get pulled... Mary Sue? Hahahah!!! not even slightly.

But seriously You should totes copyright that teeshirt and sell it to the masses. lol.

I've always liked these comics despite the lack of the connective tissue of a narrative. It's done well and for the most part seems internally consistent with how things function.

Though that image probably would make a good design for my DTG printer at work!

Have you considered doing a small kickstarter for real shirts.
Ive seen a couple with this exact goal, seeing if they can get enough orders to take advantage of high volume prices to be profitable without overcharging.

If your looking for advice on arranging for the printing and shipping hit up the guys over at [link]
They went through all this hassle about a year ago and are always cool.

Alternatively if your lazy see if the deviant store would be willing to add your shirt using their current printing and shipping deal, letting them handle all that, and just give you a small cut for concept and art.

Random printer minion here. You don't really need a kickstarter for such things anymore unless you're screenprinting it yourself. 3 color screenprint might be worth it I suppose but the startup cost of getting the silkscreen and related chemicals/equipment probably wouldn't be worth it. There's a bunch of DTG outfits you just have to upload an image to and they'll spit out individual shirts people can order. Hell deviantart does it though doesn't say who's facilitating afaik. I doubt they're doing it themselves. left/right chest and full back is some 10-20$ or so (I don't see much of the billing) depending on what shirt you're getting and if it can be screenprinted (cheaper, limited color quantity).

quick, copyright it.
better yet, see if the deviant art shop will use their current t shirt contacts to add it to their store giving you a cut for concept and art design.
They already have the appropriate buisness relationships and distribution from their current shirts.

Alternatively, kickstart it. A small kickstarter to have the shirts printed in bulk to take advantage of bulk prices. Ive actually seen a couple kickstarters with this exact goal.

If your looking for advice try the extra credits guys [link] they went through figuring all this out a year ago, OR Total Biscuit from You Tube who went through it more recently.

There is a difference between fetish characters and characters that cater to a fetish while also being interesting people with distinct, non-fetish-related personalities</a>. DA is rampant with deformed big breasted women (and men with perfect 10-pack abs(WTF)) whose only purpose is to cater to the fetish. They don't have personalities, nor are they interesting characters. Let me tell you that I don't care if a character caters to fetishes if the character her/himself is able to stand on his/her own. Gogo has always been that sort of character for me. She's very far outside the "norm" of how female characters act, and I just love that. I'm all for fucking with gender and our perception of it. As a woman, I've always been drawn to female characters who are assholes to people. XD Guess it's because women are so often expected to be "nice" and "maternal" that female characters who go against the norm are that much more interesting.

Anyway, I won't say ignore the criticism, because constructive criticism is always healthy, but I wouldn't worry about the whole Mary Sue crap. People are on witch hunts looking for Mary-Sues, and seriously, some of the most interesting famous characters are Mary Sues. Harry Potter for instance. Sometimes being "super speshul" can work to your favor, as it works to Gogo's. I've always found her compelling, and I think she's presented respectfully.

I should point out first that I'm not really concerned with the "Mary Sue" thing, since I don't personally believe it applies here and it doesn't seem to be an ongoing accusation against my character. I just thought "Mary Sue Ultrabitch" would be a funny t-shirt pic, ultimately :)

Other than that, I really agree with you overall. I would like to believe that most people view Gogo (and similar characters) as fun characters who probably cater to a fetish or two without such things being the whole appeal. (And in fact, I imagine that's more satisfying than the other way around anyway). As for fucking around with gender roles and such, it's a fun quasi-experiment to have a character like this. I'm not putting myself out there as some bold idiot who thinks he's clever for bucking the norms of gender perception; i just keep discovering fun aspects to this character that keep me interested, and hopefully others are somewhat interested too.

thanks!

Ah, well, the shirt is bitchin' then. :D

I have found that often in my efforts to create a comic that is humorous, I will make my characters into caricatures, because of course that's what's funny. So it could possible be that your motley group are slightly exaggerated anyway for humor's sake. Or maybe they aren't and they are always silly. XD Either way, Gogo probably doesn't care that she's bucking the norms of gender perception, and I like that about her too. :)
