unfinished panel from an upcoming comic...i like this one especially, because it feels sort of autobiographical (not literally, of course...)

I'm not a "great" artist or writer. I'm just a person who enjoys doing what they do. Every once in a while a builder/creator/craftsman creates something that they're not just proud of, but something that holds a special place for them, even if no one else sees it. It might sound silly, but it's kind of what my character Didi is to me. Whenever I get down about how terrible i think my work is, or whenever I wonder about whether or not what i'm doing is worth it, or even just bummed out in general, i usually have a sketch of a smiling Didi nearby to look at, and it cheers me up considerably.

Again...it's maybe a silly thing.

I guess i often just feel like Andy here looks. Unsure, resigned, exhausted. In making things, sometimes you accidentally make something that might be what you need to set you straight again.

I've never understood why people have this kind of apologetic awkwardness about laughing at their own jokes, or enjoying characters they create, or any of that sort of thing - although I've been guilty of it in the past.

Anyhow - it's not a silly thing. It is legit. So legit it hurts. People who tell you it's silly are people who are jealous they'll never have anything like that of their own.

And regardless, I think Didi has that effect on everyone. She's an inspiration to us all.

You're not a great artist..... You're a PHENOMENAL artist! I love your artwork. You're good at perspective, proportion, coloring, expression. Many of the difficult attributes for artists seem to be easy for you.

It's important to always have the mindset "It could be better", because it keeps you from settling into a rut. I'm never content with the stuff I make, there's always some other artist whose work blows my mind, so it's always a game of catching up. Sometimes it's tiring and uncertain, but it's nice to find footholds on the way. This is just one of my footholds.
